CHANNEL STABILIZATION

Channel stability issues can affect the performance of drainage structures and the conveyance capacities of channels. Channel scour and degradation can threaten the integrity of bridges and culverts in the channel, and homes and other structures along the channel banks. Channel aggradation can reduce conveyance capacities of drainage structures and channels, and lead to increased flooding problems.

After conducting a site survey and performing a hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, channel locations with stability issues are identified. Our staff has experience designing channel stability measures, such as energy dissipation structures and channel linings. These stability measures are evaluated using hydraulic, constructability, economic, and environmental criteria. In urban areas, where public parks are often located in floodplains, access, safety, and aesthetic criteria are also evaluated.
